Blog > Rise and Fall of Hostels In London

February 8, 2013

The market for hostels in London is a highly competitive market.  Millions of visitors arrive in London every year from all over the world.  As tourism continues to peak globally London continues to be one of the most visited destination in both Europe and the entire world.

The city has long been a popular destination to both start and end popular European tourist routes.  The MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index lists London as the most visited destination in the world for a second year in a row.

London, even in a sluggish world economy, is receiving a record number of tourists reaching an estimated 16.9 million visitors in 2012.

All of these tourists continue to require a place to rest their feet.  As the global landscape has changed people have begun to expect more and more from both high end hotels and even hostels.

Hostels were once known as the best option for travelers on a budget and many times quality would suffer.  With demands for higher quality there has been unique changes in the market for hostels in London.

The rise of luxury hostels such as Safestay are now appealing to those that have been looking for better quality, service, and convenience.  Tourists also want to be centrally located in neighborhood such as Piccadilly Circus & Waterloo.

This is one of the reasons why the founders of the Safestay Hostel decided to open a new brand of hostel.  Just because someone is on a budget doesn't mean they have to sacrifice comfort & quality.

Recognizing that fact Safestay has been awarded numerous awards from the likes of Hostelworld and Hostelbookers.  The Guardian has also listed Safestay as one of the ten best luxury hostels in all of Europe.

Sadly, not everyone has caught on to the trend.

While Safestay has risen in popularity in just a few years there have also been hostels that have reached the point of closure.  The history of London has seen the rise and fall of many business and hostels are no exception.

From Piccadilly Circus to regions outside of the main city there have been reports of closures of hostels that aren't able to keep their doors open any more.  The economy can't be blamed as the number of tourists visiting popular London tourist attractions has hit record numbers.

Some of the oldest hostels in London are now facing the dire option of closing their doors because they cannot keep up with the times.

Safestay pledges to keep offering a fun, comfortable, and affordable atmosphere for everyone that is on a budget.  Safestay has the history of an 18th century Georgian building, a centralized location, and a great team of fun and motivated people!

If you are looking for great value accommodation Safestay is here to serve you! We look forward to seeing you on your trip to London in the future.
